FAQ
Q1: What type of company is Com One?
The Com One (www.com-one.biz) brand of wireless products and accessories was purchased by
Baracoda in 2005. Baracoda is a French company recognized as a global leader in Bluetooth barcode
scanning and RFID solutions. Products include the Phoenix Wi-Fi® Radio, and a range of Bluetooth®
devices including the 2.1 multimedia speakers, stereo headsets, plus Bluetooth adapters for the most
popular consumer electronics with a focus on A2DP for streaming stereo audio via Bluetooth.
Q2: How is the Phoenix different from other Internet music players?
The Phoenix is a clock radio and does not require a computer to listen. It can access an endless supply
of radio stations and podcasts, and you can literally listen to any audio source that streams online. The
Phoenix Radio uses rechargeable AA batteries so it’s portable, and self-charges when plugged into a
standard electrical outlet. Stereo speakers are integrated into the device. A USB plug on the back
allows you to insert external MP3 files for listening, and a jack output lets you send signal to additional
speakers on a hi-fi entertainment system.
Q3: Does the Phoenix Radio have built-in decoders?
Yes. The Phoenix Radio supports MP3, ASF, WMA, PCM/WAV and Real Audio formats. Other formats
are being added. A unique “My Network” feature allows you to access UPnP music sources present on
your home network.
How will I get Phoenix Radio software updates as they become
available?
Simply select the Configuration/Update menu on the Phoenix Radio’s navigation knob. The radio will
download the new firmware and perform the update operation.
Q5: How do I customize my preferences?
The Phoenix comes preloaded with about 400 radio stations. You have the option of registering your
radio’s serial number (MAC address) on a personal web page. This gives you instant free access a
database catalog of about 7,000 additional radio stations you select with a drag-and-drop feature.
Preset buttons on the radio let you select your ultimate favorites.
Can I add a radio station or podcast that is not in the Com One
database?
Yes. In order to add new audio sources, select the Manage My Catalog/Add New Contents section
under the Options tab on your personal radio web page and fill in the IP address of the station you want.
Q7: Do I need to buy songs or pay to listen?
No. The pre-loaded package of audio sources is available at no cost. Phase 2, to launch at a later date,
will include premium “subscription based” services, similar to ordering premium channels for your cable
TV. The basic package will remain cost-free. Since audio is streamed and not downloaded, you do not
need to purchase songs to listen to them.
Q8: Does the Phoenix Wi-Fi® Radio have storage capacity? How much?
The Phoenix Wi-Fi radio does not store audio files. It is streaming only. Preferences (e.g. stations,
podcasts) and audio books in progress are bookmarked on a web server that delivers customized
content on each user’s personal web page.
Q9: How do you connect to the Phoenix Wi-Fi Radio?
All you need is a broadband connection and a Wi-Fi gateway such as a wireless router. If you have this
in your home you can carry the radio from bedroom to bathroom to kitchen and stay connected.
weighs less than two pounds and has integrated stereo speakers, so it’s designed to be moved.
Q10: I love the sound on my home Hi-Fi system. Any way to connect to it?
Yes, You can easily send the audio from your Phoenix radio to your high-end sound system through
either the analog audio output on the back of the radio, or wirelessly through simple Bluetooth
transmitter/receiver adapters available through Com One.
Q11: What is the Phoenix Radio service distribution platform?
It is a device management platform, a content & services management platform and a unique portal to
control a wide range of services PLUS a wide range of devices. This enables end users to add/remove
content and services. It also allows content providers to manage services and devices from one entry
point. By being compatible with the Phoenix communication protocol, any device (with an Internet
connection) can access the platform. This is a benefit for manufacturers.
Q12: If Bluetooth® gives you a wireless range of 33 feet, why do some
Com One products say you can use them in within 300-foot radius?
Not all Bluetooth classifications are the same, but, for the most part, consumer-based Bluetooth
products like headsets and speakers are based on the Bluetooth Class 1 specification. Because
Baracoda, Com One’s parent company, is invested in Bluetooth barcoding for industrial and enterprise
purposes, many of Com One products and adapters are designed as Class 2 devices, providing a
range up to 100 meters or 330 feet.
Q13: What devices does the Skype-Over-Bluetooth work with?
This Bluetooth dongle with BVM software is designed for use with any Bluetooh headset so you can
Skype hands-free and wirelessly without having to be in front of your computer. Take calls, talk and
hang up calls using your Bluetooth headset without the need to become a Bluetooth and Skype expert!
BVM software allows automatic connection and settings of your PC with your headset. It also acts as
the bridge between your Bluetooth software (virtual sound card) and Skype software.
Q14: Where can I find Com One products?
Com One products are available nationwide at CompUSA, through online retailers tigerdirect.com,
mobileplanet.com and buy.com, and through distributors DBL, D&H and Nice Stuff. For additional
